We bought our Chrysler Town and Country Touring in February 2010. At the time we weren’t expecting it to be anything more than our family car. It would transport kids to school, football games, band concerts, grandparents house and errands. Fast forward two years and we decide to move to Florida and take on the life of travel photographer, bloggers and online entrepreneurs, and our family mini van is now going to be our Roadtrip vehicle and most important piece of business equipment we own.
When we moved to Florida our van had around 37,000 miles on it. Three and a half of years later our Chrysler Town and Country has over 135,000 miles on it. Since we left on our journey 7/15/2012, we have been on 34 roadtrips and hundreds (if not thousands) of day trips to theme parks, beaches, shows and more. I sat down and tried to figure out how many miles we have done just in the roadtrips, and calculated that we have put on roughly 35,000 miles. With our day trips from the Orlando area I have calculated that we have roughly put on additional 25,000 miles.
Over the last 12 months we are starting to see all our roadtripping taking it’s toll on our van and her age is showing. From replacing wheel bearings, a new radiator, spark plugs, head gasket bolts, the alternator and timing belt. We have gone through 3 sets of tires, 3 batteries, 4 new sets of brakes and more windshield wiper blades then I care to admit. As I am writing this, Patrick is learning how to fix our entertainment system, as both screens in the have stopped working. Yes, our Touring is showing her age, but I truly believe she still has some roadtrips left in her, and have taken to Google to research what others have experienced with their Chrysler T&C Tourings.
I found this Chrysler forum where owners and potential buyers talk about various things with Chrysler products. According to everything I have read there, our Town & Country should easily get to 200k miles for us. Which, with our current Florida Roadtrip Plans and any additional roadtrips outside of the state, we should reach within the next 2 years.
Now I am not gonna lie, I would much rather be roadtripping in an RV or a full size conversion van. My dream is that one day we will be proud RV owners and touring the US (& Canada) in our RV. I will be able to setup my camera on top of it and do astrophotography while Pat and the kids sleep soundly below…. Oh to dream…..
But, for now we will be sticking with our Chrysler Town & Country Touring until she gives out on us. I have managed over the last few years to get roadtripping with two little ones down to a science in our T&C. You would be surprised at how much stuff I can pack in our mini van and still seat us all comfortably for 12 – 16 hour drive days. What about you? How many miles have you put on your main roadtripping vehicle? How many miles do you expect it to last you?
I have a T & C Touring 2010. It has currently, 224,780,000 miles on it. Apart from tires, I have spent a total of about $2000 on mechanical repairs in the 9 years i have owned it. I use it daily and have oil changes every 3000 miles. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I currently register about 500 miles a week on average. I recommend this vehicle.
Those that have had the DVD go out, how did you fix it? We can hear the movies, but can’t see it on either screen.
Aunesty,
It has been a few years since your article. Is your van still running? How many miles?
I have a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country with almost 250k miles on it. It needs regular repairs that have averaged $50/month over the past six years but my mechanic commented on how well it is doing for its age. It runs smoothly and everything still works except a couple minor quirks (one lock doesn’t always move automatically, the turn signal does not always turn off automatically, etc.). The benchseats can still be taken out and put back in place.
I’ve got a 2007 that has turned out to be the best car I’ve ever owned. Granted it hasn’t had the extensive use that some of the other posters have had, but we’ve had very few problems. Only major issues where brakes and calipers and a new muffler. Also we’ve changed the tires twice. Currently we’re running at about 175,000 miles.
I have a 2012 Town & Country and love it. Only have had normal maintenance with 236,000 miles. It still gets 21-23 miles per gallon on the highway. However, the engine is leaking oil which would cost around $600 to fix. Trying to decide if it is worth fixing and hopefully will last for several more miles or to get rid of it before something more major goes. It has been a superior van so far.
wow 236k What you have written has made my mind up to fix my 2012 t/c limited.I have 118k on it and it now need new shocks and struts cost about 1800 mainly because they r air ride shocks in rear and expensive.I keep my t/c well maintained and I love it.Also getting a po128 engine light on reading which I found out is most likely thermo stuck open about another 125 or so.Was looking to buy a newer 2016 or later but now decided not too will fix mine cus I know what I have.Being 79 I don’t drive as much another factor in my decision .thank you
I have a 2008 T and C with 387,000 miles, replaced transmission at 320,000 miles, water pump is still original, gets 22.3 on the open road, air conditioning still works fine, front brakes only issue, get maybe 30,000, some rust along door panels
I have a 2004 Town and Country I bought for 10,000 with 54000 mi. 13 year later still going strong with 211,000+. My boys call it “Bullseye”. A few rust spots, but rides like a dream. This van will out live me.
i have a 2003 chrysler town and country LXi – 3.8 liter – 4 door – it has 231 thousand miles – it runs great ! – i took all the seats out except for front two
I have a 2011 Town & Country that I bought in 2014 at 60,000 miles. I’ve had all kinds of sounds coming from the newly replaced brakes where in 3 months the brakes had to be replaced again and now I’m hearing a rubbing sound coming from the back wheels. Will the noises ever stop. I’ve been to 5 mechanics. Why can’t anyone pinpoint the problem. I finally took it to the dealer and it still has a problem. I have spent $7,000.00 in 4 months on this van. I love this van but it’s a money pit and no one can get it right. I also recently had to replace the transmission.
2008 Town & County limited edition. I love this car we bought with a 108,000 for 8k and I just turned 160k miles love it hope I have alot longer with her.
2005 Town & Country…273,000 miles and still cruising. Average repairs over it’s lifetime. A “Peach” of a vehicle!!!
My 06 T&C 3.3, has 326,000 miles on her. Still has original engine and transmission . I would buy another one in a heart beat.
Awe, I have a 2005, I’m about to hit 200K on it, but I have to retire it, because it has a bad cylinder and it would cost more to get that fixed than to get a newer van. 🙁 I’m glad to hear that yours is running well, though. I’d keep on running mine, but it wouldn’t pass emissions.
of any owners that have over 20pk miles when did you replace the timing chain? I’ve a 2005 Limited , 3.8. engine , bought at 190k last Nov. 2019.
2003 Town and Country touring…170,000 miles..just a baby..haha..Was going to look for a new vehicle, but now think I could get another year or so out of her!
I have a 2005 T&C Touring with 223,000!
I have a 2003 Chrysler town and country and it has 232,654 miles on it still running great
I have the same car with almost the same mileage, besides the tires, normal oil change and battery changed once, I did not hit the same problems that you faced. I saw a few articles on the internet with people who were able to put 1/2 million miles on their T/C. You should be able to drive that car for another 400K Miles. One thing I did was I got the Max Care warranty BUT, I never had to use it.
Picking up a 2008 T & C with 118.000 miles on it tomorrow. Paying $6,300 for it. It’s a beautiful van and well maintained. Hoping to get lots of mileage at this price out of it.
I have a 2001 Chrysler T&C, it has 224K on it and it still runs great. I’ve replaced the radiator, hubs, struts, tires, battery, lower power steering hose, rear brake line, blower motor, passenger window motor, alternator, water pump – so I’ve replaced lots of stuff. But, the engine and transmission just keep purring along. The AC still works with the occasional recharge. All in all, it’s just been a great vehicle. I honestly have no idea how far it will go. I’ve changed the oil routinely, so I’m hoping it will just keep purring along. After replacing the struts and tie rods, the van handles really, really well. I also put a slightly smaller diameter tire with a bit lower profile. I think this helps reduce the ‘splashy’ effect of taller car tires. I highly recommend the van. It’s been great. It’s like my buddy used to say ‘you either buy parts or make payments.’ 🙂
I have an 2006 T & C with only 250k miles. Running strong! Doesnt smoke. Passes smog. I am down to 20 mpg freeway but what the heck. Its paid for and we expect many more miles out of her!
Good to read these reviews. I just had to replace my Honda Odyssey after a buck jumped in front of me. I am getting a 2009 T & C with under 60,000 miles from a friend. My first one after many different kinds of vans. Looking forward to long mileage. A little worried about the complaints about engines shutting down, but hoping for the best. Too old for too many worries!
My husbands old Dodge truck had a radiator problem and we lost the engine. Luckily for us (me), the repair shop had a 1996 Chrysler T&C with every gadget on it plus 140,000 miles, $1700. All the gadgets still work, it is something we could never have afforded, $24,000 from the start 20 years ago, am so glad to hear these things last. Never had a car with so many miles on it.
That’s an awful lot of problems for a 6-year old vehicle. I am surprised considering the Town and Country is rated fairly high. I had my 2001 Odyssey for 13 years and 177k miles and the only major issue was the transmission. I did perform regular maintenance and changed the tires 3x and the battery 2x and the headight bulbs 2x. Also had to replace the radiator due to rust (I live in NJ). I did have to get the electric sliding doors fixed a few times with Honda but they did that for free. I am now on my second Odyssey (2014) and love this one even more! They included free oil changes for the life of the vehicle and all I’ve had to pay for so far transmission fluid replacement at 30k miles and tire rotation – I’ve had the vehicle for 2 years now.
When you guys are ready to replace your T&C, look into the Odyssey. I highly recommend it!
After re-reading your post, I guess most of the problems you described are general maintenance issues with perhaps the only exception being the alternator but even that part isn’t extremely expensive – it’s the labor that kills you when you bring to the shop.
As for your check engine light, you can purchase an code reader plug-in to determine the error codes if you plan on more DIY maintenance. It’s $75 for the unit but you’ll end up paying that with 1 hour at any shop for diag anyway.
I have a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country Limited that I got for Christmas 2000, It has over 260,000 miles on it and we drive from the DC area north to upstate NY, west to ,Cincinatti Ohio, and south to Orlando, Fl. Like you we have replaced a few things, but my plan is to keep it until at least 300,000 miles
Wow! I am truly impressed! I am really hoping our van will make it to 300k as well
Hi, I’m looking to buy a 2005 tnc with 244000 on it. However the new transmission has only 2000 miles on it. My neighbor used it as a work vehicle, most miles are highway and he put 3 grand into it and is selling it for 2250. I’m not a car person but it drive like a dream and I think the price is great since he’s got new struts, axel, tranny, new JVC radio that pops out, has all the perks of tilt, electric and heated seats, sun roof etc. How long do you think this should last me if I drive Less than 12000 miles a year?
I own 2012 touring T&C. The important part of owning any vehicle is not only the oil but also the coolant change and radiator flush every other year. You must remember that coolant also protects the inside of the motor not just protecting the motor from freezing in the winter time. My van has 111,000 miles. I have only replaced the brakes and tires once. I make certain the oil is changed and at the same service the tires are rotated on any vehicle for more mileage. The front steering wears down the tires faster is what I was informed by the tire shop. The van has all the bells and whistles that makes having the grand kids in the van so much nicer. The DVD player is a blessing of silence. . Nice van.
I have a 2001 T&C LX which I purchased for $10,000 in 2008 with 99K miles. Fast forward to 2018 and it is still running smoothly with199 thousand almost hitting 200K miles, it is my daily car. For being a 2001 engine, I still manage to get about 19 MPG on average. I have replaced the radiator, a/c compressor, alternator (2), spark plugs (old ones were factory installed), water pump, thermostat, front brake pads twice, back brake pads are still good. and full set of tires 3 times in 10 years. I came here curious to know how many miles other T&C owners have managed to get out or their minivans. I am a happy camper, my other car is a 2010 BMW 328i but I rather use the minivan for it’s space and comfort as a daily driver and the BMW for our weekend country getaways, I love how sports cars handle curves. Hopefully I get 1/2 million miles out of my T&C.
I have a 2005 Town and Country. I bought it in 2007, it now has 387,000 miles on it. Although many things no longer work, back windshield wiper, door locks, etc, the engine is GREAT! I still have no doubt it will get me where I need to go. 2 weeks ago I needed to get out and go for a ride…I ended up driving over 600 miles and never worried about it breaking down. I highly recommend this vehicle to everyone.
