We have lived in Florida for two years and still hadn’t ventured to any portion of southern Florida until this past weekend, when we headed down to Miami, for the Wish You Were Here – Florida! After a 3 hour drive we had finally arrived.
Not knowing anything about Miami or the location we were headed into, I was a little surprised to find that our hotel was nowhere near the more touristy part of the city. Instead we were actually in an outer city of Miami, Doral, FL. The Courtyard Miami Airport we were stay in for the weekend was tucked away in an industrial neighborhood that was right beside the airport. From the street you couldn’t even see the hotel, it was after you made a turn, into what looked like industrial office space, you saw the entrance to the Courtyard behind another hotel. To say it was tucked away is an understatement. I can see how it would be difficult to find at night if you hadn’t been there before.
I was not feeling too confident about this hotel as we parked. Just basing an immediate opinion on the surroundings and location (you couldn’t even see the city skyline from here) I was feeling discouraged because the lack of photo opportunities for me at sunset and sunrise were limited, or non existent. So when I walked into the lobby to check in, I was completely blown away at what I saw.
We have stayed in many Courtyards throughout the last few years on our roadtrips and not a single one has ever had a lobby like this. The entire lobby was a seating area with a bistro and bar that not only had tables with chairs but private booths with individual televisions! It was amazing! Totally gorgeous!
I checked us in and headed to our room to shoot it before the kiddos
destroyed it started playing in it, and I was surprised to find it was a single king bed room that wasn’t very large and didn’t have a microwave or fridge. I knew there was no way our family would fit in the room for the weekend, so I called the front desk and asked if there was a room available for us that we would fit in. Luckily she had a two room suite for us, so I moved.
The King room was very nice and would have been perfect if it were a single guy coming into to Miami for say a cheap golf weekend, the Donald Trump golf course was down the street, as well as several other golf courses. For a family though, it wasn’t the best accommodations, so off I went to the two room suite.
The two room suite had a bedroom with two double beds and a family room with a microwave, fridge and twin fold out love seat. It was perfect. The room was spacious and we spent much more time in it then we had expected and we never felt on top of each other.
The bistro and bar had really good food. We were really surprised at the quality of food. The first night we decided to try it out and ordered the Pepperoni Pizza, Buffalo Wings, BBQ Flat Bread Pizza and Chicken Quesadilla (there were four adults and two children). It was all delicious and everything was eaten up except a few pieces of pizza. The second night we also decided to get dinner there again, and just like the first night, the food was delicious.
Being close to the airport, we did get to watch a lot of planes take off and land. Literally A LOT. When awake you do notice the noise of the jets, but when sleeping they really are just white noise.
Because we were in town to see Miami, we did the 30+ minute drive to the beach so I could take some shots. We got lucky and the South Beach Seafood Festival was going on. I managed to get us press passes to go in and check it out. See More on SoBeSFF Here
Then on Sunday we decided to drive to Key Biscanye. Wow was it ever beautiful there! I am still processing those photos, be sure to follow us on Facebook to see when I post all the images I was able to capture from driving around Miami annd Key Biscaye.
