Leaving Omaha July 13

July 14, 2012 by Aunesty Reikofski Leave a Comment

Well it took much longer than we planned for to officially get on the road.  After finishing packing up the house and putting all our belongings in storage we managed to leave Omaha around 8:30pm.  Our goal was to leave around 2 at the latest… we seriously missed that deadline…

We got to Kansas City around midnight where we dropped Becca off at her dad’s house and we decided that we would go ahead and get a hotel around the KCI and head back out on the road early in the morning.  We stopped at two hotels near the airport, one in The Legends and then one more in Bonner Springs, everywhere we stopped we were told that they were all booked up and that the surrounding hotels were as well.  Oh Joy!  So we continued down I70 towards Denver, when we saw a Motel 6 off the highway in Lawrence and decided to give it another try.  It was 2 in the morning and were EXHAUSTED!  You can read my review on Our Stay in a Motel 6 here.

I am very pleased to say we really got great gas mileage from Omaha to Lawrence.  I was figuring it would be pretty bad with the cargo bag we are carrying on top of the van, and all the luggage in the van as well.  But surprisingly we averaged 17 miles to the gallon.  I have to say that the $44 we paid for the luggage topper was worth every penny and I am really glad we decided to get one.  I did see them online for cheaper than what we paid in the Wal Mart, but when we decided to do it, it was too late to buy online.

So here we go, on our adventure as the Temporary Tourists.  I am looking forward to these coming weeks as we try new things and see new things.
